Our History

Construction Companion was founded out of a commitment to protecting small business owners in the construction industry. With 30 years of hands-on experience in the building trade, the founder encountered many challenges, especially around dispute resolution and payment collection. Collaborating with a solicitor, they began drafting documents to address these common industry issues. Their joint efforts led to the creation of fair, legally enforceable agreements that balanced consumer rights with the necessary protections for tradespeople.

As the company grew, they sought out experienced business owners from other trades, expanding their range of documents.

Today, Construction Companion continues to grow, supported by a team of over 50 current and retired tradespeople, along with five solicitors, all of whom bring unique skills and legal backgrounds to the table. This collective effort ensures the production of industry-specific, legally sound documents that protect all parties involved.

  • Made For Tradespeople

We don't supply complicated contracts for giant corporations in the construction industry. We know who we want to protect, and it's small businesses like yours.

We recognised that complex and expensive contracts, typically designed for large corporations, are not suitable for small trades businesses. These documents often fail to address the specific needs of tradespeople, are too lengthy and complicated, and require a legal expert to translate. This complexity can deter customers due to their difficulty to read and understand.

On the other end of the spectrum, there are legal sites that offer low-cost contract templates for construction workers. While these may contain the necessary legal clauses to form a contractual agreement, they lack relevance and knowledge of your chosen trade and are inundated with clauses that have no relevance to your industry.

  • Our Legal Team

Construction Companion was founded to address the unique legal needs of tradespeople. Our legal team includes three experienced professionals who specialise in contract law, construction law, and litigation. They ensure that all our terms and conditions are fair and protect the interests of both tradespeople and their clients.

  • Trade Knowledge

Our documents are authored by over 50 current and retired tradespeople who bring extensive on-site experience to the table.

These co-authors ensure that our contracts address real-world scenarios and common issues that arise in your chosen sector. By incorporating their practical insights, we create documents that are relevant and highly effective for everyday use in the industry.

  • Collaborative Expertise

Our unique collaboration between legal experts and tradespeople sets us apart. Our solicitors work closely with tradespeople to review and adjust their input, creating balanced contract templates and terms and conditions that integrate both legal and industry knowledge. This ensures that our documents are not only legally robust but also tailored to the specific needs of tradespeople. Our legal team meticulously reviews these inputs to ensure they are compliant with legal standards, providing protection should the terms and conditions be contested in a dispute, mediation, or court.

  • Network of Trades with In-Field Experience

When bespoke contracts or terms and conditions are needed that are not available in our online store, our co-authors and experienced business owners in their chosen trades are called upon for their advice and input.

This can involve anything from a small business expanding and winning a tender to creating a contractual agreement for a design and build project. Our network of tradespeople, having faced similar challenges, understand the potential disputes that can arise. They liaise closely with our legal team to ensure that bespoke documents are comprehensive and relevant to our clients' projects.

  • Addressing a Critical Need

Construction Companion was created in 2008 with a mission to address a critical need in the construction industry: providing small trades businesses with reliable, affordable legal protection.

  • Financial Vulnerability

Many tradespeople face financial vulnerability due to the lack of terms and conditions and understandable legal agreements.

  • Peace of Mind

Our goal is to offer peace of mind by protecting both tradespeople and their clients from common disputes and financial risks. Our terms and conditions and agreements help ensure that all parties fully understand their responsibilities, preventing any unexpected issues during the project or upon its completion.

  • Focus on Growth

Professional terms and conditions allow you to focus on your work and build your reputation without worrying about customer uncertainties.

  • Simplifying Communication for Tradespeople

We created terms and conditions to minimise repetitive interactions with your clients. By referring customers to your company’s comprehensive terms and conditions, you present a professional image and save time otherwise spent answering the same questions repeatedly.

Let our trade-specific terms and conditions handle the details, so you can focus on your work and grow your business efficiently.
